Drake and Kady, the characters from My Life as a Dog are putting their creators in the hot seat. Don't worry, Drake's in human form, (I think), so I won't have any need to spread out newspapers in case of accidents. I'm sure Kady has him trained very well anyway!!
Though with as hot as he is, I would sure love to roll some news paper up and spank him with it or at the very least, keep him chained by my bed.
Sorry, Kady, I couldn't resist. What can I say, sexy men are my weakness!!
Well, I could drool all over Drake all day, but that's not the show you came for. Here's a reminder of the book and stick around, the interview is just a few inches away!
Drake Martin—private investigator, ladies’ man, shape-shifter—Yorkshire terrier, named Precious. Enter six-year-old Kady Hartley and life changes. Years later, they meet again. Still a PI, she's FBI. Follow them on an adventure tracking the Russian mob involving human trafficking through the streets of New Orleans and watch the fur fly.
Following Kady to New Orleans where she is on assignment he knows it will be easier to watch over her if he stays in the shadows, keeping his shifter abilities hidden. He hooks up with the local Sufi, head of the shifter family clan, but eventually engages in a bloody battle with the Russians. But, there is another enemy in their midst, one who won't rest until he destroys their chance at everlasting love...
Drake has fallen in love. Can Kady love him for who he really is, or will she leave him upon discovering the truth?
Well, now I'll hand the leash over to Kady and Drake and let them take Mike and Cynthia out for this little walk around the block... ENJOY!!
INTERVIEWER’S NOTE: The Arsuagas are a middle-aged couple, obviously happy in their relationship. Their collaboration writing the novel My Life as a Dog created us. I’m Drake Martin, CEO of my own private investigation company and shape shifter, whose alter ego is the Yorkshire terrier known as Precious. Kady Hartley still works for the FBI, and is the heroine of my story.
Kady, in her formal special agent’s interrogation voice, kicks things off today by asking: “Thanks for coming in today, Cynthia and Mike. We have a few questions for you that I’m sure the viewers would like answered.”
Cynthia: “Thank you for having us. We’ll answer your questions as best we can.”
Kady: How did you come to create us?” The violet eyes work back and forth over the author couple.
Cynthia: “One morning, Mike and I were discussing what other animals shifters could be, besides the usual wolves, bears, and big cats. Mike had just suggested a shifter could be a killer whale when our Yorkshire terrier walked into the room. A light went off in our heads, and the rest is history.”
Kady: “That’s fine for Precious, but what about us as people?”
Mike: Well, for you as a little girl I used our granddaughter Larrna as a model. Your mannerisms and dialogue come from her.”
Kady: “And us as adults?”
Cynthia: “Each of you is a composite of individuals we’ve known…and loved throughout our lives.”
Drake: “Even the Sufi character?”
Mike, smiling introspectively: “No, he was pure imagination. Somewhere in there were probably traces of childhood memories of my grandparents but I can’t put a finger on anything specific.”
Drake: “Why the little dog? And why saddle him with such a name as Precious?”
Cynthia: “My dear boy, you should already know the answer. Think of the advantages: irresistible to at least the female half the population, (Kady nods subtle agreement) offered the companionship of a loving family (Nods again). I can think of a couple times when being a big animal would’ve got you in trouble if not killed. As far as naming you Precious, well hello, you are.”
Mike: “Don’t you think being saddled with a moniker like Precious is a small price to pay?”
Drake: “Yes, but Kady is the only one now I’ll let call that. No one else, I have a reputation to uphold.”
Kady: “Tell us why you chose the animals you used in the book as shifter personas.”
Cynthia, Smirking: “We had many of the standards, a bear, a canine, and a cougar. However, Mike came up with some unique ones, a water moccasin, and…my favorite…Paco, the chipmunk. Each of the animals’ unique abilities became indispensable at some time in the story, but you already know that.”
Kady: “Why the New Orleans setting?”
Cynthia: “Mike grew up there and knows the area. The location seemed to fit the adventure and your temperaments.”
Kady: “Cynthia, tell us how you and Mike collaborated.”
Cynthia: “After we got past the idea of a Yorkie shifter, I wrote the part about you meeting Drake as a child and his experience living with you and your family. After Mike fleshed it out we posted it to some writing sites for feedback. The response was astonishingly positive and we knew we were on the right track.”
Mike: “Cynthia was tied up in another project so I picked up the stick and ran with it. Once I got started, the story seemed to write itself.”
Kady: “Surely there must’ve been some tricky spots.”
Mike: “Yes, the scenes where Drake morphed into Precious and back to hide his double identity from Kady. There were technical challenges such as Drake remembering to strip down and put away his clothes before morphing. Cynthia’s impeccable edits ferreted out any inconsistencies there as well as throughout the rest of the book.”
Cynthia: “We wanted you two to be as perfect as possible.”
Kady: “For certain you put us through our paces. Russian mobs keeping us an inch from death. Racing up and down interstate highways. Getting thrown in jail.”
Cynthia: “That might be, but also remember the love scenes.”
Kady becomes conspicuously silent, wearing a pleasant expression as she apparently recovers the memories.
Drake having silently morphed into Precious sits up beside Kady extending a tiny paw dripping with tan hair.
Kady smiles: “That’s his way of thanking you for the interview. He’s such a show-off.”
Cynthia and Mike: “Thank you everyone for stopping by today.
